Schuyler, Roche & Crisham, P.C. Large enough to to the job right, small enough to listen

Stephen J. Brown ("Joe")
Associate

With a legal practice concentrated on commercial finance and litigation, bankruptcy, loan reorganizations and workouts, a burgeoning expertise in health care law and a professional background that includes considerable in-house banking experience and financial training, Joe is able to approach his case work from many different professional perspectives. As a litigator and workout attorney, Joe has spent hundreds of hours in federal and state courts representing lenders and financial institutions in commercial, banking and foreclosure litigation. He has personally argued before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals and has significant experience with the uniform commercial code, bankruptcy and insolvency laws, debt reorganizations and asset liquidations. As a transactional attorney, Joe has helped close a wide range of deals including securitizations, syndicated and participating lending arrangements, mergers and acquisitions, secured transactions of all types, cash flow lending, mezzanine lending, "silent second" financings, vendor financings and equipment leasing.

A well-published author in both financial and health care trade journals, Joe's combined in-house banking and major law firm experience provides him with an in-depth appreciation and understanding of what his clients want—and do not want—from their attorneys. His high energy, business acumen and willingness to explore unorthodox solutions to legal questions are highly sought after by clients and colleagues alike. Fluent in Spanish, having spent six years living in Spanish-speaking countries, Joe takes great personal interest in laws related to international affairs and public policy, including immigration and health care. In 2008, he co-authored a short book on health care finance, entitled "Health Care Finance: A Primer."

He graduated cum laude with a joint J.D./M.B.A. from the University of Wisconsin Law and Business Schools in 1998. He has successfully represented clients ranging from Fortune 500 companies to the owners of small mom 'n pop businesses. He works equally hard for both.

Joe's expertise, unique background and dedication to the people that he represents are a welcome addition to the growing practice areas served by Schuyler Roche & Crisham.
