Judge Jean Prendergast Rooney--A Legacy of Excellence, Fairness, and Civility

The attorneys and staff of Schuyler Roche & Crisham P.C. are saddened to announce the passing of Judge Jean Prendergast Rooney, a former shareholder with Schuyler, Roche & Crisham, on December 8, 2015 at the age of 45.

Judge Prendergast Rooney began her law career clerking for Justice Mary Jane Theis on the Illinois Appellate Court and Justice Mary Ann McMorrow on the Illinois Supreme Court. She then joined the law firm of Quinlan & Crisham and followed Tom Crisham and Jeff Kubes to Crisham & Kubes in 2001. In 2009, Judge Prendergast Rooney, along with the rest of Crisham & Kubes, joined Schuyler, Roche, becoming Schuyler, Roche & Crisham. Judge Prendergast Rooney was appointed to the Circuit Court of Cook County in December 2010 and elected to a full term with that court in November 2012. She most recently served in the court’s Chancery Division.

Tom Crisham, with whom Judge Prendergast Rooney had worked for more than 14 years, noted that “She was probably one of the brightest lawyers I have ever known…I have never heard Jean utter one unkind word about another human being, ever. And she ran her courtroom the same way—extremely scholarly, but a great sense of empathy. In her first assignment on the Circuit Court, she had a great deal of pro se litigants appear before her in mortgage foreclosure court…She treated them with the same deference and dignity as if they were represented by the top lawyers in the city.”

Judge Prendergast Rooney’s lifelong commitment to excellence, fairness, and civility is her lasting professional legacy, reflected in her impressive achievements as advocate, bar leader, judge, mentor, colleague, and friend. She is survived by her husband, Tim; her children, Timothy, Thomas, and Colleen; her parents, Thomas and Joan; and her brother, Thomas. She will be greatly missed.
