SRC's February 16, 2011 Seminar: Risk Management and Business Planning for Design and Construction Professionals

On February 16, 2011, Schuyler, Roche & Crisham, P.C. ("SRC"), hosted its risk management seminar for design and construction professionals at McDonald's Hamburger University in Oak Brook, Illinois. The event, now in its 7th year, is organized and moderated by Jeffrey T. Kubes, a member of SRC's Board of Directors. Over 160 architects, engineers and other design and construction professionals attended the half-day event, which is provided free of charge in an effort for the firm to give back to the design and construction professional industry. New to the program this year was content related to Business Planning for the benefit of our clients and others in attendance.

Thomas W. Mulcahy, a partner at SRC, first spoke about limiting liability and other ways to manage design professionals' risk. Laurie A. Martin Montplaisir, a partner at SRC, discussed laying a foundation: corporate governance. John P. O'Malley, shareholder at SRC, addressed insurance coverage issues, including mitigating personal and professional liability. Michael G. Welbel, founder and president of M.G. Welbel and Associates, Inc., discussed client-drafted agreements; snares, pitfalls, black holes and other places to avoid. Next, Douglas A. Hanson, a member of the Board of Directors of SRC, addressed estate planning, including preserving your foundation: estate planning for the privately-held business. Clare J. Quish, a partner at SRC, discussed contractual management of risk. Finally, Thomas G. Draths, a member of the Board of Directors of SRC spoke about avoiding cracks in the foundation: guarding against employment claims.

The seminar was approved by the AIA and ALA for 3.25 Learning Units for Architects. Engineers were able to self-certify for 3.25 Professional Development Hours pursuant to ASCE and SEAOI guidelines.

Thank you to everyone who attended for making this such a successful event. We are looking forward to next year's seminar.
